  Over the past decades, information storage and processing has evolved from residing on a single computer to being shared among computers via the internet to being communicated among people using mobile phones and tablets. The next step of this evolution is connecting cars, homes, sensors, identity tags and other machines into the “Internet of Things” with gathered data stored in the “Cloud”. In 5 years the number of connected “things” is estimated to be ~30 billion for a market of trillions of $US. What will the Internet of Things really look like? What are the challenges and opportunities for systems, hardware and software? How will the Internet of Things be powered since it is not practical to have 30 billion batteries to replace? We will look at these questions and then look deeper into the place of existing and emerging memory technologies for stand alone devices and data storage.
